How We Work

The Tsunami December 2004 and following earthquake of March 2005 caused large scale loss of life and livelihood. It was clear that the area could not be rehabilitated within a short time frame or without external assistance.

Cordaid joined an assessment in February 2005 and identified programs in the relatively marginalized areas where the level of external assistance was low due to isolation and levels of underdevelopment before the disaster was relatively high. The selected areas are the Island of Simelue and Aceh Utara (Sub District of Seunuddon; east side of Aceh).

Cordaid conducted some small reconstruction programmes with an important element of community mobilization. This summary focuses on these rehabilitation programmes, being the projects presented to the SOA and Caritas Network.
