 ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK AND CORDAID
 SEUNUDDON HOUSING PROJECT
Building houses for 2004 tsunami survivors in Seunuddon

Together with Cordaid, Asian Development Bank (ADB) within its Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Sector Project (ETESP) is constructing 378 houses in the Sub District of Seunuddon, District of Aceh Utara.

This collaboration extends Cordaid’s Housing and Infrastructure Project in the same area, providing a total of 1050 houses for 2004 tsunami victims in the following 6 villages of Seunuddon:

1. Teupin Kuyun
2. Ulee Rubek Timur
3. Ulee Rubek Barat
4. Matang Lada
5. Lhok Puuk
6. Bantayan

The village Bantayan was completely destroyed by the 2004 tsunami. All beneficiaries were relocated to the village Matang Lada.

For the construction of those 378 houses, Asian Development Bank has signed a collaboration agreement with Cordaid that covers a total construction cost of US$ 3.7 million.

Situated on the east coast of Aceh, the 5 target villages were severely damaged by the 2004 tsunami. Community approach and consultation have been developed prior to the implementation, in which the 5 target villages have established a Village Development Forum (VDF). Members of VDF have been elected by the community in order to represent them and their interest. On one hand, the VDF builds the platform for ADB and Cordaid to work closely with community to meet their needs and on the other hand, for the community to address their concerns along the reconstruction and rehabilitation process.

In addition and with the fund provided by the ADB, Cordaid will also construct Community Infrastructure. Through the mentioned consultative process, the community has identified the upgrade of a stretch of road leading out of the north of the 5 villages. The road was damaged in the tsunami, and its rehabilitation and specification upgrade will provide an alternative escape route for those villagers living in the north of the coastal strip. In addition "greening activities", tree planting through out the area, will replace trees damaged during the disaster.

Previous collaboration between Cordaid and PDAM Tirta Mon Pase of Aceh Utara, in which over 25 km pipe line from Lhok Sukon Water Treatment Plant have been rehabilitated and extended to the target villages, facilitates ADB beneficiaries to connect their houses with proper water supply.

The project is due for completion by April 2008.
