School Reconstruction Project

The project covers reconstruction of 65 school buildings consisting of 32 primary schools, 18 secondary schools, 10 high schools and 5 kindergartens, spread over 5 Sub Districts of Simeulue. The green marked area on the map below indicates those Sub Districts: 

1. Simeulue Timur
2. Teupah Selatan
3. Teupah Barat
4. Simeulue Tengah
5. Salang

Lies on a geotechnically volatile location, only a few miles away from the Eurasian Fold that triggered the 26 December 2004 tsunami, Simeulue Island has experienced frequent earthquakes in the past 10 years. The concept of the school construction and design was therefore to accommodate this particular condition of the island. 

Based on this, the schools are meant not only to provide safe environment for the students but also to provide safe havens for the surrounding community in case of disaster. One of the objectives of this project is therefore as well to deliver a culture of safety within schools as to create a safe, healthy and comfortable environment for the whole schools community.
